Spectroscopic Studies Confirm Creation of Metalloenzyme with Novel Catalytic Functions
Enzymes are nature’s catalysts. They control chemical reactions with exquisite precision and speed, something that chemists strive—but often fail—to do with catalysts they create in the lab. In new research, a team of chemists from Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Universitat de Girona bridged the worlds of biology and synthetic chemistry to harness the power of a metal-containing enzyme to perform a chemical synthesis that is faster, more enantioselective and more sustainable than the current synthetic approach.

Discovery Uncovers Need for Ammonia Emission Regulations
A discovery by former Carnegie Mellon Ph.D. student, Mingyi Wang, leading a large collaborative team, sheds light on one way new particles are forming in the upper troposphere. The study, published in Nature, reveals an unexpected volatile reaction between nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and ammonia, synergistically creating new particles at a rapid rate. The findings suggest that in addition to carbon dioxide, there are other compounds in need of attention and regulation.

AI-Driven Robotic Design of MRI Contrast Agents
Using PSC’s Bridges-2 system, scientists at Mellon College of Science (MCS) have created an “artificial chemist,” a computer program that mimics the expertise of human chemists. The artificial intelligence (AI) program, or algorithm, is capable of directing an automated laboratory to synthesize new contrast agents for medical MRI imaging. The new contrast agents, thanks to the AI, have a ratio of signal to noise as much as 50 percent higher than previous state-of-the-art, human-designed materials. This performance boost offers the possibility of improved diagnosis as well as a host of possible breakthroughs in other fields relying on new chemical compounds.
